September 20, 2006

The Goodyear blimp was flying over Pasadena this afternoon. I went to Target and asked a sales associate where I might find the shoe polish and she got this puzzled look on her face and, you won't believe it but I knew it was coming, she said, and I quote, "Shoe polich, what is that?"

Now, I didn't say shoe polich, but that was how she pronounced polish. The fact that she had no idea what shoe polish is (or polich) is disturbing me more and more the longer I reflect on it. However, that wasn't the end of my search for shoe polish at Tarjay. I found another sales associate and asked her where I might find the shoe polish. "Shoe polish? I don't think we carry that."

Needless to say, I was in a hurry but found the shoe polish on my own and, after picking up a couple Star Wars action figures and some way overpriced hair pomade, was on my way.

I've been to busy to do my homework on the new calendar, but I've done some research and found some highly interesting studies. More to come soon.

I like the idea of Funday too; but that means that only 5/8 (63%) of the week are workdays instead of 5/7 (71%). I think a ten percent decrease in worktime might cause economic collapse. Then again Europeans get 6 weeks of vacation and have like 34 hour work weeks and they still do OK so maybe we could swing a Funday after all. :)

What's a goodyear blimb?

I think if we added a Funday we would not be left with 5/8 or 6/8 workdays, but be tempted to go to 7/8. It would just be an excuse for many people to work for an additional day. In other words, I think that we would be tempted to add more and more days to the week in order to get stuff done until we would end up with 12- day-weeks or so. We should rather stick with the traditional 5 1/2-6/7- workday-weeks ("Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest," Lev 23:3). I can imagine the creators had fun while they were working, but they also had a well-balanced work load and worked on something different every day. But then, I am just thinking, did time exist back then? Adam on the other hand was told that he would "In the sweat of [his] face [...] eat [his] bread" (Gen 3:19)and Eve similarly. For this reason, and from a European perspective, I think we are entitled to a good vacation from time to time. Maybe it's the instigation of time that made life difficult...
